Magic Jello ice

Kids love science and we are always exploring to fine new things to do with things around the house. Back in March we made Fizzing Shamrocks and since then we have been messing around to make a better mold.

Well we came up with it and had a lot of fun playing with our Magic Jello Ice Stars. They are simple to make and super fun.

All you need to do is mix about 3 tsp of jello with 1/2 cup of hot water, once the jello is dissolved then mix with about 1-2 cups of baking soda. Don't make it too thick you want it a little runny to pour into the ice trays. (We got our start ice trays from Dollar Tree)

Then let it freeze and you have your magic jello ice.

Place on a tray and make them erupt and bubble with vinegar. Once the vinegar dissolve them you will have a goop like sensory play.

NOTE: You can make them with Kool-Aid as well.

This is a fun experiment for all ages.

We love ice play be sure to check out some other fun ice things we have done.

Kool-Aid Ice boats

Fun way to stay cool this summer and have fun playing. Make some fun kool-aid ice boats and play for hours, in the pool or make your own stream.

All you need is some kool-aid packets, ice trays or even small bowls to make bigger boats. Then place sticks or straws in them to freeze and add the sails once the water is frozen.

The to make your stream just get some aluminum foil and add water. We added some rocks to ours. (You can build it however you want)

The kids had fun using their water squirt toys, filling the stream and melting the ice. Fun way to play and stay cool in the hot summer weather.

Ice is fun to play with and there is so many different fun ways to play with it. Be sure to check out some of the other fun ways we have played.

Rainbow Science for kids

We love science and have been working on colors with my youngest so, I put together this fun and easy colored science fun. All you need is a tray, baking soda, kool-aid and some water, NO VINEGAR.

It will keep your kids busy for at least 20-30 minutes if you use a spray bottle or pipette to make a bubbling or fizzing rainbow. This is a great fine motor skill as well as science fun.

Jake and Cate had so much fun doing the Shamrock science I set up another fun science twist with colors. The key is to set it up and add a little twist each time to keep the kids interested in it.

If your kids love science and experimenting be sure to check out all the fun you can have with science and kool-aid

Rainbow erupting "Ice Volcano"

"J" would sit and do volcano's all day long if you gave him enough baking soda and vinegar. With all the fun science we have been doing the other night when freezing things for other projects, I thought how cool would it be to have an ice volcano.

So I gathered a container, a cup to place in the middle for the hole and some heavy rocks to keep it from floating and it worked.

When "J" saw me take it out of the freezer he said, "mom, what is that?" I told him and he was so excited.

Materials:
Bowl
Cup(to place in the center for the hole)
Something heavy to hold the cup down(we used some small rocks from our sensory play)

Then to make it erupt we used kool-aid powder(rainbow colors), baking soda and water. (You can use vinegar if you want, but the reaction of kool-aid and baking soda mixed will erupt with just water...due to the acetic acid)

Place baking soda and kool-aid together in the middle of the ice. Then squeeze water or vinegar and it erupts. Can do several times just rinse the ice off.

This was alot of fun to see all the colors appear at once.

If you and your kids love to do science be sure to check out our science projects we have done.

Dancing powder kid science

For the ones who follow us, know we love science play and exploring new things. When we were playing with our Fizzing goop science a couple of weeks ago we came across another fun and easy science play.

You can make kool-aid and baking soda fizz and bubble with out using vinegar, due to the reaction they have in water.

Materials:
Kool-aid packets
Baking soda
Spray bottle with water not vinegar
(Very inexpensive experiment and lots of fun for kids of all ages)

If you are using this as a teaching experiment for older kids here is some science info. They do not react with water, but instead they react with each other when dissolved in water. For example, acids are only really "acidic" when they are dissolved in water...acidic meaning they give off H+ ions. So, since citric acid is an acid(the kool-aid), and baking soda is a base, when the citric acid(kool-aid) and baking soda dissolve in water, they react with each other forming sodium citrate, carbon dioxide and water.

I loved it when "J" would sprinkle the kool-aid/baking soda mixture on the tray not knowing what color it was and be surprised when he sprayed it.

If your kid(s) like science like we do then you have to check out some of the other fun things we have done below.

Homemade sand art project for Valentine's

We were in the craft store the other day and "J" saw these cute plastic heart sand containers and asked could we get some for grandparent gifts. So we did. They were $1.00 each.

Then when we got home we made some fun scented sand and the kids made some fun sand art projects.

Materials:
Salt (1 used 2 26 oz containers) less than $1.00 for both
Kool-aid packet (strawberry and pink lemonade)
2-3 tsp of water for each color.....you don't want it too wet.
Plastic sand art container or you can use a recycled water bottle with lid

How to make:
1.Mix all 3 ingredients together
2.After I mixed it up I placed in the oven @ 350 degrees on a cookie sheet for 15-20 minutes to get the colored salt to dry like sand.
3. You want to check on the sand and stir it up a couple times while in the oven.

This is a great craft for kid parties, play dates, make to give someone or just for fun. Plus it is super inexpensive. The salt sand cost less than $1.00 to make.

Here are some other Valentine's craft you might like to try as well.

Make your own scented goop

The kids love science play and mixing things together. If you like messy play you have to try this fun scented goop. "C" loves to get her hands all into the play, while "J" on the other hand doesn't like the mess on his hands unless it is cooking.

When you mix cornstarch and water together, you get a goopy substance that you can squeeze as a solid, but when you release your hand, it will slip off your hands like a liquid. However, if you let your hand settle on it, it would sink into the goop.

If you have never tried this you have to it is a fun experiment.  It's something you just HAVE to feel. It's pretty awesome stuff for a kid, or an adult.

New way to make goop: 2 cups baking soda, 1 cup of cornstarch and 1 cup of water and a packet of kool-aid.

Above in the pictures you can see, your hand sinks into the goop, then when squeezing it is hard and then turns to a liquid when dripping off you hands. The feel you can't describe you have to try it.

Be sure to check back this week cause we have some really fun science with Fizzing Goop!! LOTS of fun!!

We love mixing fun scents into our play so be sure to check out some of the other fun things we have done here.

15+ things you can do with Kool-Aid

Food coloring can get expensive using a lot of it, so I started using kool-aid in its place. Well it has worked great and has brought a lot of fun to our play.

There are so many ways you can use kool-aid. I have gathered a list of things we have done and over time there will be more to add, so be sure to check back.

Also, kool-aid is $.20.  What better way to have fun then to add a little scent to your play.

Note you can mix kool-aid in with store bought play-doh as well for a fun smell

       3. Kool-aid spray paint art

        5. You can make Kool-Aid lava for the volcano's.....makes the vinegar smell alittle better.

Don't have a post for this but we use this for the lava when we do volcano's with baking soda

             7. Make your own scented paints

        8. Kool-aid colored pasta

     9. Scented bath paints

                  11. Kool-aid tea party fun great for a hot day!!

     12. Yogurt paints

    13. Rainbow cupcakes

14. Dyed Eggs

We did this at Easter and all you have to do is add water and a little vinegar to the kool-aid and it dyed the eggs.
