Kool-Aid Ice boats

Fun way to stay cool this summer and have fun playing. Make some fun kool-aid ice boats and play for hours, in the pool or make your own stream.

All you need is some kool-aid packets, ice trays or even small bowls to make bigger boats. Then place sticks or straws in them to freeze and add the sails once the water is frozen.

The to make your stream just get some aluminum foil and add water. We added some rocks to ours. (You can build it however you want)

The kids had fun using their water squirt toys, filling the stream and melting the ice. Fun way to play and stay cool in the hot summer weather.

Ice is fun to play with and there is so many different fun ways to play with it. Be sure to check out some of the other fun ways we have played.

Rainbow science

I took the kids to the science center when we were in Florida and there was this really neat book that had some simple but fun experiments to do with the kids.

So in the Florida sunshine we tried it.

Materials:
Glass of water (filled 3/4)
White sheet of paper
Bright shining sun outside

Hold the glass of water up so the sun is shining through it, then placed the white paper in front of it and move the paper to an angel. Then you will see the rainbow on the paper. The kids were amazed. Have to admit I even thought it was really neat.

Jake and Cate are too young to understand why it happens, but for older kids you can explain that the rainbows form when the light is refracts when it passes through the glass of water. It happens just like real rainbows form when the sunlight refracts through raindrops.

Test tube science

Jake loves to make the Lava lamp we did last year. We have made it several times. So today I mixed the fun science up a little and we did in the test tubes we have.

Jake and Cate had a blast watching it bubble and fizz at the top of the test tube. You make them the same way you do the Lava lamp, but you just don't put the top on and it was pretty cool to watch.

Materials:
Test tubes
Cooking oil
Water
Alka seltzer
Food coloring

Be sure to check out our Science link for more science play and learning.

You can but the test tubes inexpensive at Science Bob's on-line store, we got ours at Lake shore Learning.

5+ color science experiments for kids

We have been exploring different ways to have fun with colors and science, so I gathered up a list for them to be all in one spot for you.

Below are pictures and the links to see how to do them.

They are all a lot of fun and simple enough for preschoolers as well as older kids.

Counting and color matching learning game

I was on Pinterest and came across this free mason jar printable by Sweetly Scrapped, so I printed several of them. Thank so much Sweetly Scrapped!!

I colored them different colors and wrote the name of each color on the jar, then laminated them so we could use them several different times.

I bought a bag of jelly beans and poured them in a bowl and gave Jake and Cate each their own mason jar printables.

Cate (2 y/o) had her sort the colors and she also did some counting.

Jake (4 y/o) had him count and match to correct color. Then did some small math asking if I took or added blank # how many does that give him?

You can also use this as a fun busy bag game as well.

They both were really into this learning game.

Rainbow Science for kids

We love science and have been working on colors with my youngest so, I put together this fun and easy colored science fun. All you need is a tray, baking soda, kool-aid and some water, NO VINEGAR.

It will keep your kids busy for at least 20-30 minutes if you use a spray bottle or pipette to make a bubbling or fizzing rainbow. This is a great fine motor skill as well as science fun.

Jake and Cate had so much fun doing the Shamrock science I set up another fun science twist with colors. The key is to set it up and add a little twist each time to keep the kids interested in it.

If your kids love science and experimenting be sure to check out all the fun you can have with science and kool-aid

Fizzing scented sidewalk paint for kids

We love to paint and mix science in with the fun things we do.  We had a nice day to play a little outside so I whipped up some fun scented sidewalk paint.

I mixed baking soda, dish soap, kool-aid and very little water together to make our paint. You can make it with corn starch instead of dish soap, but I found it to harden up if it sat for a period of time.

I didn't measure the amounts just placed baking soda, dish soap and water in a bowl. Then when I placed the mixture in the muffin pan I added the kool-aid.

Then place vinegar in a spray bottle and after the kids paint the sidewalk a little give them the spray bottle to make the paint fizz.

This is a super fun and inexpensive outside activity to do with the kids on a nice day.

Shamrock science for kids

Three great ways to add a little St.Patrick's Day fun to kids science play. Twist things up a little to make it look and seem different to them using some house hold items.
Materials:
Vinegar
Baking soda
Glitter
Shamrock table toppers(Dollar Store)
Tray
Bowl
Shamrock molds (A.C. Moore use coupon get it for $4.99)

How to make Shimmery Shamrock Science

Mixed baking soda, green kool-aid, and glitter all in a bowl, then placed water in a squeeze bottle and made it erupt.

How to make Erupting Green Shamrocks

I mixed our fake snow mixture together and added green kool-aid to it for the green color, then placed it in a silicone shamrock mold and let them freeze over night.  That made them hard like rocks. Then I placed them on a tray/pan and the kids used pipettes to squirt the vinegar on them for them to fizz. We had Fizzing Shamrocks.

This is a great fine motor skill for toddlers and preschoolers using the pipettes.

We have made fizzing rocks before but never thought about putting them in molds til I saw it at Science Sparks from Pinterest.

Make your own Glittery Shamrock Play Dough

You can make this 3 different ways use regular store bought play dough, kool-aid play dough, or gluten free play dough. Then just add some fun glitter to it and play away. We also added mint extract to this batch for a yummy smell.
