Slushy Magic science in a bag

If you visited before you know by now that we love science and experiments. I was on Pinterest the other day and came across this site to make your own slushy in a bag. Using salt, water, baggies and kool-aid.

Yes , I know I thought the same thing, Yeah right!!

Well I am here to tell you it works and was the coolest thing ever. Jake my 4 y/o thought this was the best thing.

Thanks to the super mom over at  Charlie Brown's Teacher for this awesome science experiment lesson. You can read more on her site about the science behind it all.

So if you were looking at the "Slushy Magic" that is advertised on TV, don't waste your money. Also, there is really no mess to clean up doing it this way.

All you needed to do is fill a quart size baggie with salt and water, place in the freezer over night (which doesn't freeze it turns to slush), then you place the small baggie inside a large zip lock baggie pour the kool-aid mix in the large baggie and shake for a couple minutes and you have a slushy mix.

Pictures below shows the steps.

When you are making you only have to use 1/2 of the kool-aid mix and we used about 2 cups of water. You don't want to fill the bag were it is too heavy.
NOTE: We used freezer baggies they are stronger.

Shake, Shake, Shake and then you have your slushy

We have done some fun science with rainbows and shamrock be sure to visit the links below.

Homemade "GLUTEN FREE" play dough

Play dough is so much fun, what kid doesn't like to play with it?  When I was making the Magic Model Clay the other day instead of wrapping it up to cool down I let a batch sit out to see if it would work as play dough. Well it did.

After it cooled down the kids played with it and had a blast. It was the softest play dough and the great thing was it was made without flour so it's "Gluten Free".

I know there are a lot of recipes out there that call for flour to make homemade play dough so I was excited when this worked and as you can see we made several YUMMY smelling batches.

You can made Model Magic the same way just after cooling under a damp towel, mold to the shape you want and let it air dry.

Materials:
3 cups of baking soda
2 cup of corn starch
2 cups of water
Kool-aid or Duncan Hines frosting packets. (Both work the pink is bubble gum and the blue is cotton candy)
Food coloring works as well, but then you don't have a fruity smell.

Mix all the ingredients in a cooking pot, place heat on medium and stir til you have a dough. Only takes couple minutes. Kids can help but need to be supervised.

1. All the ingredients mixed together in pot
2. Thicken up
3. Looks like mash potatoes
4. Cooling
5. Playdough or Model Clay ready to play or mold

We are having fun doing Rainbow themed things to teach colors to my youngest, be sure to check out some of the fun below.

Make your own Peppermint ice cream sandwich

We all know this time of the year Peppermint is one of the famous flavor for the season. Well today, while the kiddos were napping which is not very often at the same time. I made them SUGAR FREE peppermint ice cream sandwiches.

Easy as 1,2,3.

Materials:
Sugar free whip cream
Graham crackers
Peppermint extract
Green food coloring
Shoe string licorice(I got ours at Walgreen's down the candy aisle)

To make:
Let the cool whip sit to get soft, then mix the food coloring and peppermint extract in with the cool whip. Place in freezer to get hard again and then take out scoop on the graham cracker, put the other graham cracker on top and eat or you can place back in the freezer.

Then I made them alittle decorative by adding shoestring licorice. So it had that present look to it.

The kids can even help with this. The next batch going to have the kids help. Wanted to see how it all worked out before I had them help and then "J" get upset if it didn't work.

They were YUMMY and I loved how easy they were to make.

Healthy homemade strawberry and banana ice cream

Today is Tuesday Treat day for summer time, we have been on a roll of making our own ice cream. J loves doing all the prep for it, so today we did ice cream and popsicles.

For the ice cream all you need are frozen strawberries and banana's, milk and a blender. We added 1/2 cup of milk to 1 banana and 5 cut-up strawberries. (You can use as much or little as you like to each)

Then blend and you have homemade ice cream(soft serve). If you would like it a little harder then place in the freezer for 30 min.

To make popsicles do it all the same just add 1 cup of milk then pour into popsicle containers and let it freeze for couple hours.

There you have it easy to make ice cream and popsicle and the nice thing is it is healthy.

Hope you enjoy this as much as we did.

Tuesday Treat #3 (DYI Banana Ice cream)

Today was treat # 3 for the summer and so we made banana ice cream. DYI banana ice cream is too simple your preschooler could do this with no problem. The Best thing about this is your kids will think it is ice cream, and they are eating healthy and don't know it. Both my kids like banana's but will not eat them plain.

1. Take banana's and cut them into slices.

2. Place them in the freezer on a plate or tray(let them get hard, takes about 45 min.)

3. Place them in a blender or food processor. (We did the blender on low)

4. Scoop it out and there you have it homemade soft serve banana ice cream. If you like harder ice cream after you blend it you can place it in the freezer for 30-45 mins.

YES, it is that simple use nothing but a banana. But you can add sprinkles, chocalate, peanut butter or whatever toppings you would like. It was close to bed time for J so I didn't offer the extra stuff but next time we will try it.
