A lot of people use food coloring to color rice and pasta, but food coloring can get expensive . So I experimented with kool-aid packets and it worked great along with being very inexpensive. Plus you have more colors to work with.
Materials:
Rice uncooked we used about 3-4 cups
kool-aid packet
water
vinegar 1/3 cup (I feel the vinegar is safer than the rubbing alcohol if the kids put it in their mouth, which is bound to happen with little ones)
How to make: I add 2-3 cups of water, kool-aid packet and vinegar in a bowl. Stir for couple min. then let it sit for about 1/2 hour to get the color to set. Then I drain and let it sit over night on a cookie sheet to dry.
It's nice to cause this is a project the kids can help with and teach numbers with measuring.
Colored rice is fun to use for art, sensory play and pretend play as well.
