Sensory play with ice art

Well we had a nice day outside today so I thought I would do some ice art with the kids. J my son liked when you put salt on the ice and dropped food coloring over it cause it would make cool designs.

Now my daugther on the other hand just wanted to eat the ice.

Materials:
frozen ice....I put water in balloons and let it sit over night
Food coloring...whatever color
Salt
I added some letters for extra play and had some toys as well like shovel, bucket with water and droppers.

Putting the food coloring on the ice.

J putting the salt on the frozen ice....it's funny cause he doesn't like to get his hands dirty.

Using the dropper to put water over the ice.

C eating the ice....all she really liked.

Pretty ice art with the salt and food coloring.

Kool-Aid rice

How to make colored rice using Kool-Aid

A lot of people use food coloring to color rice and pasta, but food coloring can get expensive . So I experimented with kool-aid packets and it worked great along with being very inexpensive. Plus you  have more colors to work with.

Materials:
Rice uncooked we used about 3-4 cups
kool-aid packet
water
vinegar 1/3 cup (I feel the vinegar is safer than the rubbing alcohol if the kids put it in their mouth, which is bound to happen with little ones)

How to make: I add 2-3 cups of water, kool-aid packet and vinegar in a bowl. Stir for couple min. then let it sit for about 1/2 hour to get the color to set. Then I drain and let it sit over night on a cookie sheet to dry.

It's nice to cause this is a project the kids can help with and teach numbers with measuring.
Colored rice is fun to use for art, sensory play and pretend play as well.

Make sure you check out all the other fun things you can do with Kool-aid.

Home made sensory table

Well I have been wanting to get or make a sensory table for alittle while now. My wonderful husband and son got it done this weekend. It was the cutest thing to watch my son all into it with his daddy.

They took a trip to Home Depot and got all the supplies during the week and that has been all my 3yr old has talked about.

Below are some pictures of them making it. We still have to paint it and thought it would be a fun project for my son and daugther to do when it warms up so for now will just have it plain.

Materials:
2x4 wood
plywood
nails
storage totes

Soil and rice bins

Have to say it turned out better than I thought it would and saved alot of money. $30 total for wood and totes is better than $100.-400.

Sensory dirt fun

Today it was a rainy day so I thought that I would bring the outside fun inside. Got a large tote and filled it up with potting soil and added some garden/digging tools. The kids had a blast. I also gave my son some seeds and he placed them in the soil like he was planting a garden. They spent an hour playing in the soil and digging.

My son (3 yrs) loved playing with the water making mud with the soil. My daugther (16 months) loved scooping up the soil and putting it all over the floor and rubbing her hands in it. The funny thing is you would think the boy would be all about getting dirty and it was the girl who wanted to do that.

What's needed for the project:
soil....got it from Family Dollar for $3.00
tote/large bucket.....$5.00
spoons, digging tool....picked up some from the Thrift store

Salt Dough thumb print keepsake

Make a fun keepsake to give loved ones. This is a super inexpensive craft and lots of fun for the kids.

Materials:
3 cups of flour
3 cups of salt
2 cups of water

Mix all that together til you get a dough, then roll out and cut shapes out with cookie cutters. I made ours about 1/4 in thick.

Be sure to use a straw to poke a hole in the top for string or you can glue and make magnets.

We let ours air dry, but you can place in the oven to bake or microwave.

If you like to make Valentine's keepsakes be sure to check out the other fun things we have done as well.

Snowman name craft

Well, Monday was a down day the kiddo's were not feeling too hot. So we decided to have a lazy PJ kinda day. Today still not all the way back to par so (J) did a little craft. The weather is still cold so he made a snowman and we added his name to it, cause he is learning how to write his name. We got the spelling part down.

The snowman is cut out circles using a bottle lid, the snow is torn up cotton balls, then the tree's are parts cut off the real wreath we had from X-mas(which he loved cutting up with his scissors). Letters are cardborad from leftover scrapbook stuff we had on hand. Then glue it all together. He had a blast making it.

Learning the alphabet and sounds

Well we have been working on learning the sight of the alphabet and I have made some learning center activities for us to work on shown in my past post.

Well I got out of the house for the 1st time in a week after the kiddo's and I have a BAD winter head cold. Momma was happy went to this Thrift store someone told me about in the area and hit the JACKPOT.

I got some brand new Leap Frog learning systems for my preschooler and he loves them. We had started watching the Leap Frog DVD word factory and sounds of the alphabet and now he has a game to go with it, like a kid in the candy store....lol.

So today we had fun playing the alphabet game after we had some friends over for a small play date. Along with some fun rice sensory fun as well.

This was the board game  that I scored from the Thrift Store for $1.90 and he loves it!!!
