Holiday scented sensory cloud dough

We played with Cloud dough for the first time back in February and "J" loved it. Now that "C" is old enough to play with it thought it would be fun to put together a sensory bin with a theme like The Imagination Tree did.

If you have never been to her site you have to check it out she has inspired me to do more Themed sensory bins. GREAT stuff and fun.

The things you can do with your kids are endless with sensory bins.

Materials:
Flour
Vegetable oil
Warm sugar cookie oil (optional) we got this from the the candle/oil section at Wal-Mart or you can use peppermint extract

If you are making this for a younger kid (that puts things in their mouth) don't recommend using the oil, but you can add cooking extract for a nice scent.

Then I gathered things I had on hand around the house that were baking related and the kids had a blast.

If you have never made this cloud dough is it so soft, but forms when you squeeze or pat it. It does make a mess so I placed a big table cloth under the kids, it was too cold to go outside.

Holiday/Christmas scented play dough

We love playing with play dough, there is so much you can do with it and it is great for fine motor skills as well.

We made our 1st batch of scented homemade Kool-aid play dough in February and my son loved it. So I couldn't wait for Christmas time to come this year cause I had so many different scents I wanted to try for fun play.

Where to get the oils:
Here is where we ordered our Wintergreen oil for the green play dough.
I got the Peppermint extract from Wal-Mart in the spice section
Warm sugar cookie and Cinnamon Nutmeg came from Wal-Mart as well from the candle section.

(If you have a little one that puts things in their mouth would not use the oils, just stick with the Peppermint extract.)


Also, remember you can use these oils for many other things like we have added them to our paint(post coming soon), Scented glitter, cloud dough play, bath paints, and so much more.



Materials:All-purpose flour....1 and 1/4 cup
Salt...1/4 cup
Scented oils or extract you would like to add
Boiling water....1 cup
cream of tarter...1 tbsp
Oil...1 and 1/2 tbsp
wax or parchment paper
large ziploc baggie....to seal play dough in

How to make:
Put all dry items in the bowl, then add water and oil in, stir with a fork 3 to 4 min or until cool, then mix with hands until blended

Place on wax or parchment paper, knead until no longer sticky, add flour as needed....we had to add flour.

Store in Ziploc or airtight container in refrigerator.

If you don't want to make homemade play dough, you can also buy the store bought and add the oils to that as well.
Making the play dough is fun and easy, your preschooler can make it, fun cooking/bonding time in the kitchen.

Recycled light bulb turned into a snowman

We have been doing fun things snowman related, cause we started the Christmas season watching Frosty the Snowman after Thanksgiving. So below is a fun craft to make with the kids. You do some and they do some. Then you have a fun and cute ornament to hang on the tree. That was created with bonding between the family.

Materials:
Light bulb
White pipe cleaners (2)
Acyclic paint (white)
Glue gun
Ribbon
Sharpie black and orange (for the mouth and nose)
Heavy glue
Goggly eyes(can draw on if you want)
Buttons(optional)
2 sticks for the arms (kids picked them when we went on a walk)

To make it follow these steps:
Paint the light bulb white first, then once it is dry glue the white pipe cleaner around the top and the stick arms using the glue gun, then add the googly eyes and buttons(kids can do this part with heavy glue).

*Older kids can help but just make sure you are watching them with the glue gun.

Frosty the snowman Christmas Bath Fun

One of our favorite times of the day is bonding at bath time, it has been since the kids were babies. With Christmas coming around the corner and us doing snowman week with crafts and learning.

I set up a build your own snowman fun. All you need is some craft foam from Dollar Tree or your local craft store and cut out the stuff yourself.

I got white for the snowman and then black for the buttons, eyes, pipe and mouth, orange for the carrot nose. The hat I colored with marker.

Placed it on the wall of the bath and the kids had a blast dressing and putting the snowman together. (If you didn't know this when foam gets wet it stick to the tub or wall)

This bath is worth the $2.00 spent on the foam and the time to make it. I also added the snowflake foam from our Snowman learning bath, so that got reused again for the $1.00 spent.

I also added some blue food coloring to the water to give it that Wintry feel.

Just think of the fun memories and pictures you get that will last a lifetime.

While the kids were playing I also read this book to them.

Being silly in the tub....love this.
"J" laid in the bath and said, "look I am covered with snow" (top picture)
Then both the kids put Frosty's pipe in their mouth being silly again.

Make your own snowman keepsake ornaments

Fun way to keep the memories of your little one(s) by placing their finger and thumb prints to make an ornament.

As parents we know that our little one(s) grow so fast, and at Christmas time I love pullin out last years ornaments to see how they have grown in a years time.

So this year for the tree we made snowman keepsake ornaments.

To make this ornament it is simple and very inexpensive.

Materials:
Clear plastic ornament from your local craft store(Micheal's, Hobby Lobby, Joann's or A.C. Moore)
the price is $1.29 @ Micheal's and Joann's you can also use coupons to get it cheaper.
Acrylic paints
Sharpie market (black) I used this to make the snowman hat
Mod Podge or clear glaze spray to protect the outside.


I used the thumb for the base, pointer for the center and pinky for the face of the snowman.

This is a great craft to give as a gift to family members or for kids to make in the classroom.

Snowman themed learning bath

With Christmas in the air and the love of snowman, thought it would be fun to make a snowflake spelling bath since we have been working on sight words.

I would say the letter and "J" would find it, then he put it on the wall or the side of the bath tub and I would tell him what word it spells.

This week is going to be a snowman week of fun, so if you like snowmen like we do be sure to check back.

This bath was simple to put together I got window clings and snowflakes from the Dollar Tree, then just used a sharpie to write letters on the snowflakes.

This is also something fun to do on the wall of a classroom or playroom and play a holiday word game with the kids.

Then after "J" and I did some spelling fun I added Snowman glow sticks to the bath. "J" and "C" had a great time playing with those.

DIY Scented glitter for crafts

One of the best things about Christmas is the smell of Cinnamon and Peppermint so what better way to make crafts then with Scented Glitter.


Materials:
Epson Salt.....can get at Dollar Tree
Cinnamon spice......can get at Dollar Tree
Peppermint extract....local grocery store
Green food coloring.....get at Dollar Tree

This is a very inexpensive to make. The Peppermint is $4.97 but you can use this for many other things.

To make Cinnamon Glitter mix Epson salt and  Cinnamon spice til you have the smell, then add a small dab of water to make the color for vibrant.

To make Peppermint Glitter mix Epson salt and peppermint extract together with a small dab of green food coloring.

Reindeer keepsake craft

Simple, Fun and Inexpensive reindeer craft keepsake. You can use this craft in many different ways.

It can be a magnet, picture frame, or an ornament.

Materials:
Popscile sticks (We used the large ones from Craft Project Ideas, be sure to check out all the cool craft supplies they offer)
Paper for the hand prints
Paint (brown)
Red button
Googley eyes
Glue
Black felt
Contact paper or laminate (I used this for the hand prints to protect)

Glow in the dark Christmas lantern

We made a simple Glow in the Dark lantern in February and "J" loved it so I thought it would be fun to make a Christmas lantern.

So I gathered the materials and made it. "J" really liked it.

Materials: In the picture below

For the glow stick I cute it with scissors and just let "J" pour. Not safe for kids to touch or handle with out a parent.

 Stickers had "J" place on the mason jar to decorate it, also great fine motor skill for kids. Then after he decorated it then he added glitter inside the jar and poured the glow stick jucie in the jar.

Make sure you crack the glow stick to glow before you cut and pour in the jar.

Alittle hard to see it glow cause the camera.

 You can make these for all occasions.

Alphabet Puzzle Learning Bath

What better way to have fun teaching your kid(s) then in the bath. "J" really loves doing learning in the bath cause we make it a fun time and turn it into a game, plus it is great bonding memories.

This bath is very simple to put together all you need is foam sheets, scissors and a sharpie marker.  I got a huge pack of all different colors from Michael's Craft store for $7.99, but used a 50% off coupon and got it for $3.99 great deal.


Material:
Scissors
Sharpie marker
Foam sheets (13) I think they are 5x8 in. You can get a pack of 20 at the Dollar Tree.

To make the puzzle pieces I cut the foam sheet in half, to get 2 pieces. Then cut the puzzle pieces from that so 1 sheet will give you 2 puzzle letters. 

Once the foam is wet it will stick to the wall or the side of the tub like a sticker....makes for fun play with learning. You can also use them on dry erase boards the same way.

Canvas Christmas Keepsake footprint

I love all the hand and foot print keepsakes for my kids, so last year I made reindeer ones. I wasn't blogging at the time so I am going to share it with you guys this year.

Materials:
Canvas your choice in size the one I used was 9x9 (my daugthers foot was small then)
Black sharpie marker
Acrylic paints
Googley eyes
Foam paint brush

Tip: I made the lights using a fine tip on the end of a paint brush and just did dots.
