Rainbow erupting "Ice Volcano"

"J" would sit and do volcano's all day long if you gave him enough baking soda and vinegar. With all the fun science we have been doing the other night when freezing things for other projects, I thought how cool would it be to have an ice volcano.

So I gathered a container, a cup to place in the middle for the hole and some heavy rocks to keep it from floating and it worked.

When "J" saw me take it out of the freezer he said, "mom, what is that?" I told him and he was so excited.

Materials:
Bowl
Cup(to place in the center for the hole)
Something heavy to hold the cup down(we used some small rocks from our sensory play)

Then to make it erupt we used kool-aid powder(rainbow colors), baking soda and water. (You can use vinegar if you want, but the reaction of kool-aid and baking soda mixed will erupt with just water...due to the acetic acid)

Place baking soda and kool-aid together in the middle of the ice. Then squeeze water or vinegar and it erupts. Can do several times just rinse the ice off.

This was alot of fun to see all the colors appear at once.

If you and your kids love to do science be sure to check out our science projects we have done.

Thanks for stopping by to see what fun stuff we are doing. Be sure to come follow us on

  1. Okay, I need help! My son will love this, but I can't get my cup to stay down for anything. Do you put the rocks on top, around the outside, or inside? Thanks for sharing this awesome idea!

    1. Sorry didn't see your comment....you place the cup in the water and then put something heavy inside the cup to keep it from floating up.

  2. I think she means to put the rocks in the inner cup to hold it down, and pour the water around the outside of the inner cup, in the bowl or other larger cup. that way, the inner cup keeps the ice open in the middle... make sense?
