Learning math with a tape measure

We have been working on numbers and different things that can be used with numbers. So today we measured things and drew lines.

Had some wood left over from making the sensory table, so we used that.

J got out his tape measure, pen and we went work.

Homemade Strawberry Pie

We went strawberry picking again and all my son talked about was coming home and making a homemade strawberry pie. Well I have never done this before, couldn't tell him that. We all know that kids think Mom, knows/has done it all.....right, well not this time.

So I got on the computer and googled homemade strawberry pie's. Read some recipes and then made up my own little version, have to say it turned out pretty good....Daddy ate ALOT of it. So had to be good then...haha.

Materials:
Strawberries
Strawberry jello mix
Cornstarch
Pie crust....we used Pillsbury pie dough
Pot to heat the sauce in
Small baggie(to smash the strawberries in)
1/2 cup of sugar
1st cut up the strawberries, place in the baggie and smash them up, then get 1 cup of water, jello mix, and smashed strawberries, mix all 3 together in the pot. Cook on low heat for about 5 minutes and then add 1/2 cup of sugar and 2 teaspoons of cornstarch in and stir, til you get like a syrup mix, you might have to add alittle more cornstarch to thicken it.

Then pour syrup mix into pie crust, add some whole strawberries with stems cut off. Place in oven on 350 degrees til crust is brown and let it cool and serve.

J had a great time making the strawberry pie. This is a great hands on project for the kids. Lots of fun teaching could be added in.

Birthday Boy day of fun

Today my son turned 4, man where has time gone. Just seems like yesterday I found out I was pregnant with him. Never thought I could love something/someone so much, til I first saw him and brought him home.

We have always made a big deal for birthdays, I remember as a kid that was our special day and we got to do whatever we wanted for the day, within reason...lol

So as a Mom I  wanted to carry that tradition on for our kids.

Asked J what he wanted to do and he said stay home and play, play, and more play. So we did.

1st we opened up his gifts.

My mom came into town last night to be with him for his special day. Meme got him a camping set so we played camp-out and we had a blast.

Next he opened his gift from Grand-dad and that was a tool bench he has wanted. So, I had to put it together for him and we played tools.

Then he got a power wheel 4 wheeler from mom and dad, rode on it.

Sissy(his sister) got him a mud pie baking set.....we made a birthday mud pie cake and had a tea party.

Then dinner at his FAVORITE place to eat Japanese Steakhouse. The craziest thing  happened when we went to dinner, we sat with another blogging family that was visiting from Texas on vacation.

Well as you can see we had a busy day, think we will need to be resting tomorrow.

But, after all said and done, tonight when I tucked him in J said, "Mom I had that best day today, thank you!" Well I had tears in my eyes.

C is for Crab

We are so ready to go to the beach and make sand castle's, walk down the beach, look for shells, play in the water and just have fun.

So I took out the egg carton's last night and thought hey we can make a crab and a turtle. So today we made the crab and used our colored salt as sand to make the ocean on left over canvas.

J was into the sand pouring, but wasn't too sure about the crab til it came together and looked like a crab in the ocean.

Was proud once it was all finished.

Materials:
Egg carton
Paint (red)
Pipe cleaner(red)
Plastic eyes
Glue
Colored sand/salt
Salt shakers( made it easier for the kids to pour)

Pizza Time sensory

Well who doesn't love Pizza? Have to say this was a fun sensory play, from rolling the dough, to throwing it in the air, and having our own pizza shop. This is a must try.

Went to The Dollar Tree the other day for my weekly run of fun things to gather for projects, came across pizza sauce, pizza pans, oregano and pepperoni and a light went off in my head, hey we could use some of the left over spaghetti as the cheese, so I got all the stuff. We always have flour on hand for the fun things we like to do.


Put it all together and we had a fun pizza party on the deck.

"J's" favorite part I think was throwing the dough in the air, he laughed every time. The sound of a kids laugh is so priceless.

For less than $5.00 you can do this fun sensory and pretend play with your kiddos. Trust me they will like it. Tonight at bedtime my son said, "Mommy can we do that pizza fun again tomorrow."

 We didn't even use all the pepperoni you get 2 packets for $1.00. The pizza sauce as well only used half. Flour we only used 3 cups. Pizza Pans are reusable and oregano well there is still a lot left as well. So really for less than $5.00 you can have multiple sensory plays with it.

Colored salt, shaving cream, water =GOOP

We were playing making pretend food with colored salt, shaving cream and water(Ice Cream Sundae's) today and came across this cool goop mix after mixing stuff together.

Love when you are doing one thing and something else you never did before comes from it.

My daughter had a fun time playing in it. "C" would pat her hands in it and say, "Patty Cake, Patty Cake" was cute.

"J" didn't jump in this fun play cause he is not into the messy play....too funny.

So all you have to do is mix colored salt or you can use plain salt, I think the color makes it fun, shaving cream, and water. Not too sure of the amounts, just keep mixing til you have a sandy goop feel.

It did have a pretty cool texture, "C" liked it sat and played with it for a good 20 min., good time for a toddler.

Marshmallow-Oatmeal mud pie sensory

We have been having a blast doing all this outside cooking/baking with real food sensory fun. So I gathered some leftover stuff we had in the pantry and we had some fun.

I wasn't sure how "C" would do with all this, cause she was a baby last year when "J" and I had fun doing some sensory play.

Well have to say "C" has really enjoyed this cooking/baking sensory play this week. She loved getting her hands all messy. "J" at times doesn't like his hands all dirty, that is why you will see him using spoon all the time not touching most of it. I think I did some of that mess stuff to him cause I was always whipping his hands when he was younger, you know that 1st time mother thing....lol.

We didn't use all the Hershey Cocoa Powder maybe 1 cup, still had alot left. Also, the oatmeal we use only a cup or two.



This is why we play with real food cause "C" thinks she need to try everything.

Love this picture, "J" got his candy dispenser with the airplane on it that the propeller goes round and used it as a mixer....love his imagination.

"C" went to one of the sensory tables and made mud water with her mix, liked pouring it back and forth.

I love the bond my son and daughter have!!!
